About

I am a professor and head the Research Unit Educational Theory and
School Research at the University of Graz. My research is rooted in
General Pedagogy, from which I explore fundamental questions about
education, upbringing, and social change. My work combines research,
teaching, and practice through an interdisciplinary approach that
includes scholarly analysis as well as educational policy and cultural
perspectives.

After studying Pedagogy and Political Science at the
University of Vienna, I completed my doctorate on autonomy in education.
My academic career has taken me to the University of Leipzig and the
University of Applied Arts Vienna as a professor; I have also taught as a
guest lecturer at TU Darmstadt and TU Dortmund, and worked as a
Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Hertfordshire.

At the center of my work is the question of how General
Pedagogy can be connected with arts and cultural education as well as
educational research. I am interested in how educational processes can
be studied and shaped in exchange between academia, practice, and
society.

Research

My research, teaching, educational policy work, and
externally funded development projects focus on the social conditions of
education — especially on issues of quality, accessibility, and social
reach.

This is reflected in work on democratic school development,
projects aimed at opening cultural institutions to diverse audiences,
analyses of power and inequality in educational processes, and
curatorial formats that make aesthetic education tangible as a social
practice.

Teaching and knowledge transfer

In my teaching, I engage with the basic concepts and
theories of pedagogy, philosophical perspectives on schooling, and
questions of democratic professionalization and cultural organizational
development. In introductory seminars, advanced seminars, and colloquia,
I work with students on the organizational-pedagogical challenges of
schooling, cultural education, and theories of space and practice.

A particular focus lies on methodological approaches that
include aesthetic perspectives. Research-based courses have repeatedly
led to film and book projects as well as curatorial formats in
university museums and regional exhibitions.
